Reaching Out

Shelbi Tassin,

I am fortunate enough to be the mom to two wonderful children and married to my High School sweetheart who is Active Duty. Being a military spouse has provided me with experience on the struggles that both service members and their families face. We were recently relocated to Virginia where we will hopefully be for a few years. I am very passionate about helping military families and providing support within the community when it is possible. I served as the Command Family Ombudsman for almost 2 years and Volunteered with Navy Marine Corps Relief Society as a Customer Car Representative for a year. I obtained my certification with ARC in Special Education Advocacy in 2021 and have volunteered time in the community helping other military families advocate for their special needs children in the educational system. I am currently employed full-time in the Housing and Travel Department of a travel nursing company and am a full-time student working towards the completion in my bachelor’s degree in psychology. My family’s favorite time is summer because we can spend out free time at the beach, the pool, and enjoying the outdoors.  I have a true passion for helping others and taking what life experiences I have and try to turn them into a moment I can learn from and share with others.

My Why...

As a military family, we have experienced the stress and challenges that military service brings and it can be incredibly taxing on Mental Health. I have watched my children overcome challenges with their mental health, which has led to me learning how much advocacy it takes to ensure they have all of the support they need. There were times I have witnessed a military family member or service member trying to obtain help with their mental health when they are in desperate need and are not being "heard" and not having someone to advocate for them. I myself have had a mental health crisis that truly tested every ounce of strength I had to overcome it. It is time to advocate for change and support those fighting for their mental health, especially those who sacrifice so much for others. I want to be part of making a difference and supporting those when they are in their darkest place. Never forget you have a purpose and your story is not over!

My Core Values...

Integrity * Respect * Kindness
