Are you a good listener?

Hello! Communication is so important! We want everyone to feel comfortable reaching out if they need help. We want the communication to be open and honest. Part of good communication skills is being a good listener. Do you know how to listen? Here are some tips to become a good listener.

  1. Listen with no distractions! So often we are on our phones or otherwise distracted. Finding time and space to listen without distraction can guarantee you are hearing what the other person is saying.

  2. Paraphrase what the person has said to confirm you are understanding what they are saying. This will help the person feel heard and understood.

  3. Listen without judgement.

  4. Ask questions! Ask the person to explain further or ask how they are feeling.

  5. Do not offer advice unless it is specifically asked for. Sometimes all a person needs is someone to listen.

If you are having a hard time being a good listener try an active listening exercise. Sit down with a partner, friend, spouse, parent, etc. Set a five minute timer and let the other person talk, they can talk about anything, you cannot speak just listen. Then switch, set another five minute timer and talk about anything. This time the other person cannot speak. This is a great exercise to practice your listening skills!

Have a great day!
